FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Nurse aides or nurse assistants need to attend CNA training in New York to prepare themselves for their upcoming career. Our training is divided into two parts: classroom instruction and clinical training. Through lectures and discussions, nurse aide students will learn the different nursing concepts and subjects such as anatomy, nutrition, medical technology and physiology. In the clinical portion, nurse assistants will apply and practice nursing skills. An educator supervises students as they work with individual patients in long-term care facilities. This work both trains students for their future jobs and prepares them for the state competency examination.

Along with self-confidence and personal maturity, patience is crucial to being a CNA. Good interpersonal skills with an emphasis on being a team player are especially valuable traits for all health care workers. Enjoying working with people is necessary in this field. Also good communication and critical thinking skills are central to what we do in nursing.

All comprehensive testing and assessment services for CNA’s are conducted by PROMETRIC in New York State. PROMETRIC also maintains the New York State Registry, which is a list of all certified nurse aides in the State of New York.

Upon successful completion of both parts of the exam (written portion and a skills assessment), an applicant is issued a certificate by PROMETRIC which allows a nurse aide candidate to work as a certified nurse aide (CNA) for 2 years. At the end of each 2 year cycle, a renewal notice is sent to the individual CNA. Upon return of the renewal form, documentation of employment, and renewal fee to PROMETRIC, a new certification is issued for 2 more years from the last date of verified employment.
